About House of Makers
House of Makers is a stichting that creates performative, interdisciplinary work: installations, live performance, and film, built around a single recurring question, what happens between a performer and an audience when the usual boundaries of a discipline are set aside. We treat every stage as a site-specific location, and every production as a chance to bring together artists who, in a more conventionally structured field, might never share a room.
House of Makers was founded in 2012, and became a foundation in 2020 under the artistic direction of Peter Leung and Brigitte van Hagen.
From the Sun's Perspective (2022/23) asked whether music could be experienced without hearing it, and brought together a mixed-ability cast, among them a partially-sighted clarinettist and a deaf dancer, across twelve performances. Narcissus & Echo (2021), made together with Veejays.com in the isolation of a global lockdown, asked whether a shared experience could survive at a distance, and became an interactive virtual reality performance touring stages across the Netherlands, from Felix Meritis to the Wilmink Theater. Within Time (2020), made in co-production with Het Grachtenfestival, gathered singers, musicians, and a dancer to give the private griefs of that period a shared, musical shape; Dansmagazine called it a beautiful performance about the present time.
House of Makers works with a small, trusted core team and a wider circle of collaborators drawn in project by project, choosing each time the disciplines and the people the work itself demands.
