How we work

Every project asks for something different. At House of Makers, every project starts with the question of what it needs: which makers, which musicians, which materials, which place and which audience. A performance for a mixed-ability cast asks for something different than virtual reality dance or new music theatre. So for each project we assemble a team that fits the artistic question, and choose deliberately who we work with.

People. We love working with freelancers. It keeps us connected to the breadth of the field and helps build a sector where talent can grow. We treat everyone we work with with respect and kindness, and we do our best to communicate honestly and with integrity, also when something doesn't go as planned.

Learning and sharing. We look for ways of working that are effective: efficient where possible, without losing what a project needs. We do this by continuing to learn. Makers share their practices with us, we do research, and we talk about what works and what doesn't. As a core team we worked with a coach to sharpen our goals, and our board offers guidance and holds us accountable.

Materials. We use the materials a project needs and are conscious of waste: whatever we can borrow, reuse or share, we do.

Audience. We perform on small and large stages. Reaching people from different places and backgrounds is valuable to us, and where we can, we seek out that connection.
